Audi Could Launch A Rugged Off Road SUV As Demand For Adventure Vehicles Grows

Audi Is Looking At The Off Road SUV Segment
Audi may soon join the growing list of brands building rugged looking SUVs for buyers who want adventure focused vehicles. Audi CEO Gernot Döllner recently confirmed that the company is actively “evaluating” a more off road focused SUV model for future markets.
Speaking during a roundtable discussion, Döllner explained that the United States cannot be treated as a single market because customer preferences vary widely from state to state. What sells strongly in California may not work in Nebraska. According to Audi, one segment that continues to show strong potential is off road ready SUVs.
That statement alone makes Audi’s direction quite clear.

Off Road SUVs Continue To Grow In Popularity
Adventure themed SUVs have become a major trend across the automotive industry. Buyers want vehicles that look tougher, sit higher, and feel ready for weekend trips even if most owners never leave paved roads.
Brands already benefiting from this trend include:
| Brand | Off Road Lineup |
|---|---|
| Honda | TrailSport |
| Subaru | Wilderness |
| Ford | Tremor |
| Toyota | TRD Pro |
These models usually combine:
- Raised suspension
- Chunkier all terrain tires
- Rugged body cladding
- Extra drive modes
- Improved ground clearance
The formula is simple, but customers love it.
Audi Already Tested The Idea With The Q6 E Tron Off Road Concept
Audi has already shown what an off road focused electric SUV could look like. In 2025, the company revealed the Audi Q6 e-tron offroad concept.
The concept featured several dramatic upgrades, including:
- 6.3 inches of additional ride height
- A track width widened by 9.8 inches
- Aggressive off road styling
- Large off road tires
While the concept looked extreme, Audi would not need to bring all those upgrades into production. A toned down version with mild suspension improvements and rugged styling could work well for everyday buyers.
Bentley May Have Already Inspired Audi
Audi also has another example close to home. Fellow Volkswagen Group brand Bentley recently showcased an off road inspired version of the Bentley Bentayga.
That concept reportedly created strong interest among dealers and customers. Audi may see a similar opportunity in the premium SUV market, especially as luxury buyers continue moving toward lifestyle focused vehicles.
Why This Move Makes Sense For Audi
From a business perspective, rugged trims are usually cheaper to develop than entirely new models.
Audi could simply modify existing SUVs like:
- Q5
- Q6 E Tron
- Q7
- Q8
The company would mainly need suspension tweaks, wheel and tire upgrades, and new exterior styling elements. That approach keeps development costs lower while allowing Audi to charge higher prices for special trims.
It also helps Audi compete more directly with brands already succeeding in this category.
Buyers Want Rugged Styling More Than Hardcore Capability
The reality is simple. Most buyers rarely take their SUVs into serious off road conditions. Still, people enjoy the idea of owning a vehicle that looks adventure ready.
Subaru and Honda already proved that customers respond strongly to this formula. Audi entering the segment now feels less like a surprise and more like the next logical step.
If Audi moves forward, expect the brand to focus on premium comfort first, while adding enough off road styling and capability to attract adventure minded buyers.
