Volkswagen has finally done it. The GTI badge has officially entered the electric era with the debut of the Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI. For years, Volkswagen kept its performance EVs under the GTX branding, but this new model changes that completely.

That motor produces 223 horsepower and 213 pound feet of torque. Power goes straight to the front wheels through an electronically controlled front differential. Volkswagen says the car can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 6.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 108 mph.

Volkswagen has also worked on the handling side of things. The ID. Polo GTI comes with adaptive suspension and revised steering tuning designed for a more engaging driving experience.
There is also a dedicated GTI mode button mounted directly on the steering wheel. Pressing it changes the chassis and drive settings to their most aggressive setup while also changing the display graphics inside the cabin.

Sportier Design Without Going Overboard
The regular ID. Polo already has a clean design, so Volkswagen did not completely reinvent the car for GTI duty. Instead, the company added several subtle performance touches.
At the front, a red accent line runs beneath the full width LED lighting strip. The front bumper gets honeycomb styling along with vertical fins inspired by race car tow hooks.
The car also rides on standard 19 inch wheels featuring a unique two tone design with silver trapezoidal accents.
At the rear, Volkswagen added:

- Redesigned rear bumper
- Integrated two piece diffuser
The result looks sporty without trying too hard. That has always been one of the best things about GTI models.
Interior Keeps Classic GTI Elements Alive
Inside, Volkswagen mixed modern EV technology with classic GTI references.
The seats feature a crisscross pattern inspired by the tartan cloth inserts seen in older GTI models. Red stitching appears throughout the cabin, including on the steering wheel and dashboard trim. A red GTI logo also sits below the headrests.
Volkswagen also added some retro inspired digital graphics. The 10.3 inch instrument cluster can mimic the gauges from the original first generation Golf GTI. Meanwhile, the 12.9 inch touchscreen changes its interface to match the retro theme.
One detail stands out in particular. When music plays, the system can display the track using a cassette tape animation. That is the kind of nerdy touch GTI fans will probably appreciate more than they admit publicly.
Price and Availability
Volkswagen plans to launch the ID. Polo GTI in Germany during fall 2026. Pricing is expected to start at around $45,000 based on current exchange rates.
Unfortunately, Volkswagen has confirmed that the ID. Polo GTI will not be sold in the United States. The same applies to the standard ID. Polo hatchback.
Why the ID. Polo GTI Matters
The GTI badge means something special to Volkswagen fans. It has represented affordable performance and everyday usability for decades. Bringing that badge into the EV world was always going to be controversial.
