iRacing Career Mode Is Nearly Ready, And It Could Change How You Play The Simulator
Table of Contents
iRacing’s long awaited single player Career Mode is finally getting close to release, and this time there is a lot more information about what players can actually expect.
The biggest surprise is probably the simplest one. Career Mode will not require players to purchase additional cars or tracks. It will be included with a standard iRacing subscription.
That is a pretty big deal for a simulator where buying individual cars and tracks has traditionally been part of the experience.

iRacing Career Mode Is Almost Ready
iRacing has been working on its single player Career Mode for some time. The company has now confirmed that the feature is technology complete, with development moving into bug fixing, usability testing and final polishing.
iRacing has not announced a firm release date yet. However, Greg Hill, iRacing’s President, said the team was close to making the August development update an official release announcement rather than another progress update.
So, while there is still no confirmed launch date, the finish line appears to be getting very close.
No Extra Car Or Track Purchases
This is easily one of the most important parts of the new Career Mode.
iRacing normally operates on a subscription model. From August 18, 2026, the standard direct subscription pricing became $14.75 for one month, $37.50 for three months, $124.50 for 12 months and $222.50 for 24 months. Cars and tracks are normally purchased separately.
Career Mode takes a different approach.
Players will get access to the cars and tracks required for their career without buying them individually.
There is an important catch, though. The content access applies only to Career Mode. Cars and tracks unlocked through a career do not become available for use across the wider iRacing service. They also lock again after the relevant race week or season is completed.
Still, for anyone who has looked at the cost of building a large iRacing content collection, this is welcome news.
Seven Careers Will Be Available At Launch
iRacing says Career Mode will launch with seven unique careers, with more careers planned later.
The idea is not simply to put the player into a fixed championship and tell them to win races. The careers are designed around realistic racing ladders, objectives and progression.
Two players aiming for the same destination could potentially take very different routes.
For example, drivers chasing a top level GT career could compete in different regions and follow different steps before eventually reaching the same level.
The system is intended to cover different areas of motorsport, including both road racing and oval racing.
What Career Mode Will Offer
At launch, iRacing says players can expect:
- Seven different career paths
- Racing progression through different levels
- Objectives for each season
- Leaderboards
- Adjustable difficulty
- Adjustable race lengths
- Adjustable schedule lengths
- Access to required cars and tracks without additional purchases
- Different routes through the racing ladder
- Content designed around realistic motorsport progression
The company describes each career as having roughly a full game’s worth of content.
That is quite a statement for a feature being added to a simulator that has historically focused heavily on online racing.
Winning Every Race Is Not The Goal
One interesting difference is how iRacing handles progression.
Career Mode will not simply ask players to win races and move up.
Instead, players will receive objectives and need to achieve a certain level of performance to progress. Finishing position and standings will still matter, but the system focuses on meeting the objectives set for each season.
That sounds closer to how a real racing career works.
You do not necessarily need to win every weekend to move forward. You need to perform well enough to satisfy the requirements.
But there are consequences for repeatedly failing.
Players get a limited number of additional attempts. Continued failure can eventually lead to demotion and even force the player to restart a career.
In other words, iRacing is still iRacing.
It probably was never going to hand out trophies for turning up.
Difficulty And Race Length Can Be Adjusted
Not everyone wants a 40 minute race after spending all day at work.
Thankfully, Career Mode will allow players to adjust the difficulty. Race length and schedule length can also be customised.
That should make the mode more approachable for players who want the career experience without committing to extremely long race weekends.
Players who want a more demanding experience can make things tougher, while those looking for a more relaxed single player experience have some flexibility.
Career Mode Is Built Around Progression
The basic idea is straightforward.
You start lower down the motorsport ladder and work your way towards the top of your chosen category.
The progression system takes inspiration from real world racing careers, with different stages, objectives and performance requirements along the way.
iRacing says the Career Mode was designed by a combination of sim racers, internal designers, a former motorsport team manager and professional racing drivers.
That mix should help the mode feel less like a collection of disconnected races and more like an actual racing career.
It Will Not Have Everything At Launch
There is one area where players should keep their expectations under control.
Career Mode will not launch with every feature that people normally associate with a career mode.
At launch, iRacing will not include systems such as:
- Driver or owner management
- Sponsorship management
- Team budgets
- Full team management
iRacing says these deeper systems could arrive through future updates.
The company is treating the launch as the foundation for a larger single player system rather than the final version of the feature. Future plans also include additional careers, special Career Events and systems such as Save Game.
Why Career Mode Matters For iRacing
For years, iRacing has been known primarily for competitive online racing.
The simulator has AI opponents and players can also drive alone in testing and practice sessions, but a traditional single player career has never been a major part of the platform.
That is now changing.
A proper Career Mode could give players a reason to spend more time inside iRacing without immediately jumping into competitive online racing.
It could also provide a more comfortable way for newer drivers to learn different cars, tracks and racing techniques before taking on the wider online community.
iRacing previously described Career Mode as a way for drivers to progress through different racing ladders while developing their driving skills and racecraft.
More iRacing Content Is Coming
Career Mode is not the only major project currently being developed.
The August 2026 development update also covers the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR LMH, Caterham Academy, Caterham 420R, major track updates, physics improvements, UI changes and work on iRacing’s new graphics engine.
The simulator’s Season 4 update is also bringing significant changes to physics performance, including a new architecture that iRacing says can reduce CPU physics overhead by 50% or more in heavy traffic and large AI grids across a wide range of hardware.
So Career Mode is arriving at a time when iRacing is changing quite a lot behind the scenes.
iRacing Career Mode Release Date
There is no confirmed release date for Career Mode yet.
The latest official information says the feature is technology complete and has moved into bug fixing, usability testing and final polish. iRacing has not provided a specific launch day.
Based on the latest development update, however, it looks considerably closer than it was before.
For now, the important points are clear: seven careers are planned for launch, the mode will be included with an existing subscription, players will not need to purchase additional cars or tracks for their careers, and iRacing plans to expand the system after launch.
For a simulator that has spent much of its life telling players to race other people, giving them a proper career to build on their own is a surprisingly big change.
And the fact that iRacing is not asking players to buy another garage full of cars just to play it makes the whole idea considerably more interesting.
