Tesla’s Cheapest Model 3 Is Now on Sale in Canada, But U.S. Buyers Miss Out
Table of Contents
Tesla has quietly launched its cheapest new Model 3 in Canada, and the price is getting attention for one simple reason. It starts at around $31,000 USD after conversion. That makes it far cheaper than the American market version.
The catch is obvious. American buyers cannot get it.
The new version is a Shanghai built Tesla Model 3 RWD Premium, and Tesla is importing it into Canada as trade rules between the two countries continue to shift.

Why Tesla Brought This Model 3 to Canada
Electric vehicle demand continues to grow, especially as fuel prices remain unstable. Buyers want affordable EVs, and Tesla knows that price matters more than ever right now.
In the United States, the cheapest Tesla Model 3 RWD starts at around $38,630. That already makes it one of the more affordable premium EVs on sale, but it still sits out of reach for many buyers.
Canada now gets an even cheaper option because Tesla can import vehicles from its Shanghai factory at a much lower cost.
According to reports from Automotive News, Tesla started bringing the Chinese built Model 3 into Canada after trade conditions changed between Canada and China.
Tesla Model 3 RWD Premium Price In Canada
The Shanghai built Tesla Model 3 RWD Premium starts at CAD 39,490 including delivery charges.
At current exchange rates, that works out to slightly below USD 31,000.
Here’s how the pricing breaks down:
| Variant Feature | Extra Cost |
|---|---|
| Stealth Gray | Standard |
| Pearl White | CAD 955 |
| Deep Blue Metallic | CAD 955 |
| Diamond Black | CAD 1,469 |
| Ultra Red | CAD 1,910 |
| Quicksilver | CAD 1,910 |
| 19 inch Nova Wheels | CAD 1,469 |
| Black and White Interior | CAD 955 |
Tesla also offers Full Self Driving as a subscription service in Canada for CAD 73 per month. Buyers get a 30 day free trial.
Why This Tesla Is So Cheap
The lower price mainly comes down to manufacturing and tariffs.
Canada currently applies only a 6.1 percent tariff on certain Chinese made EVs under a new trade agreement. Earlier tariffs were much higher.
Meanwhile, U.S. built Teslas became significantly more expensive in Canada after Canada imposed a 25 percent tariff on American imports, including automobiles.
That pushed some higher trim Tesla Model 3 variants close to CAD 80,000, which is roughly USD 60,000.
For Tesla, importing from China simply became the cheaper option.
Performance Differences Between Canadian And U.S. Model 3
The cheaper Canadian Model 3 does lose some performance compared to the American version.
Here’s the main difference:
| Specification | Canada Model 3 RWD Premium | U.S. Model 3 RWD |
|---|---|---|
| Battery Type | LFP | NMC |
| Range | 288 miles | 321 miles |
| Charging Added In 15 Minutes | 160 miles | 170 miles |
| Charging Speed | 250 kW | 225 kW |
The Canadian car uses lithium iron phosphate batteries, also known as LFP batteries. The American model uses nickel cobalt manganese cells.
LFP batteries usually cost less and offer strong long term durability, but they often provide slightly lower driving range compared to NMC batteries.
That explains why the cheaper Canadian Model 3 loses around 33 miles of range.
No Canadian EV Rebate For This Tesla
There is another important detail buyers should know.
Because this Tesla comes from China, it does not qualify for Canada’s CAD 5,000 EV rebate program.
Canada requires vehicles to come from countries with a free trade agreement to qualify for the incentive. China does not meet that requirement.
So while the car starts cheaper, buyers still miss out on government support.
Tesla Has Done This Before
This is not Tesla’s first time shipping Chinese made vehicles to Canada.
The company previously imported Shanghai built Model 3 and Model Y vehicles before Canada introduced a 100 percent tariff on Chinese EVs in 2024.
Things changed again in January after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping negotiated a new trade agreement.
The revised deal reduced tariffs to 6.1 percent for a limited number of Chinese made EVs, plug in hybrids, and range extended electric vehicles.
Right now, the agreement covers up to 49,000 vehicles annually, with plans to raise the limit to 70,000 units over the next five years.
Final Thoughts
Tesla’s new Canadian market Model 3 shows how much pricing can change depending on global trade policies and battery sourcing.
For Canadian buyers, this becomes one of the cheapest ways to own a new Tesla. For American buyers, though, it is another reminder that the U.S. market still does not get every affordable EV option Tesla builds.
