Tesla Emergency Drive Away Lets Drivers Escape Superchargers in an Emergency
Table of Contents
Tesla has introduced a new safety feature called Emergency Drive Away, giving drivers a way to leave a Supercharger during an emergency without manually unplugging the charging cable first.
The feature allows a Tesla to shift into Drive while it is still connected to a Supercharger. However, there is a major catch. Pulling away will damage both the vehicle and the charging equipment.
Tesla says Emergency Drive Away is intended only for genuine emergencies.

Why Tesla Added Emergency Drive Away
The new feature follows a shooting in August at an In N Out restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho. Ten people were killed or injured in the incident, including Tesla users who were sitting inside vehicles while charging at Supercharger stations in the parking lot.
Until now, Tesla vehicles could not be shifted into Drive while connected to a charger. Drivers had to manually disconnect the charging cable before moving the vehicle.
That created a problem in a situation where someone needed to leave immediately.
Tesla had no built in way to override the charging lock. Some owners instead turned to third party adapters that could bypass the restriction. Tesla had warned that these adapters could overheat and potentially damage the vehicle or charger.
Emergency Drive Away now provides a factory supported alternative.
How Tesla Emergency Drive Away Works
The feature arrives through an over the air software update. Once installed, the vehicle can be moved into Drive while the charging cable remains connected.
When the driver selects Drive, a warning appears on the screen with an option to activate Emergency Drive Away.
The driver then needs to:
- Hold the brake pedal.
- Tap Activate on the warning screen.
- Shift into Drive and leave the charging position.
The system is designed to let the vehicle pull away even though the Supercharger is still connected.
Pulling Away Will Damage the Charger
This is not a normal charging feature and Tesla is very clear about that.
When the vehicle drives away, the charging connector is forcibly pulled from the port. The cable can snap back aggressively and parts of the charging equipment can break away.
That means Emergency Drive Away comes with a potentially expensive consequence.
Tesla warns that using the feature will cause significant damage to the vehicle and the Supercharger. The company has also said that intentional misuse could result in additional penalties.
Tesla’s charging account said repair costs could reach up to $25,000, depending on the Supercharger involved.
So, this is essentially a last resort feature. If there is no immediate danger, unplugging the vehicle normally remains the right way to leave.
Emergency Drive Away Availability
Emergency Drive Away is not available on every Tesla in every market.
For now, Tesla says the feature works only with U.S. Superchargers. The company could expand it to other markets in the future.
Tesla also says owners need the latest software update to access the feature.
There is another limitation. Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles built before 2021 are not supported.

Tesla Wants Drivers to Use It Only in an Emergency
The important point here is that Tesla has not designed Emergency Drive Away as a convenient way to leave a charging station.
It is an emergency override.
Normally, the charging cable locks the vehicle in place until the driver disconnects it. Emergency Drive Away bypasses that protection when getting away quickly matters more than protecting the car or charger.
Tesla has also warned that deliberately using the feature when there is no emergency could lead to additional penalties.
For Tesla owners, the feature provides something they did not previously have: a built in escape option if an immediate threat develops while charging.
It is not a cheap escape button. It is more like an emergency exit that you really hope you never have to use.
