Mercedes AMG GLA Electric Spied Again, Performance Version Could Produce More Than 500 HP
Table of Contents
Mercedes Benz is preparing a new generation of electric performance models, and the upcoming Mercedes AMG GLA Electric has now been spotted testing in Europe. While the prototype does not look as aggressive as many AMG models, the real story is expected to be hidden beneath the bodywork.
The latest spy photos suggest that Mercedes AMG is focusing more on performance than flashy styling. If the reports are accurate, this electric crossover could produce more than 500 hp and become one of the quickest compact electric SUVs in its class.

Mercedes AMG GLA Electric Design
The front and rear sections of the prototype remain heavily covered, making it difficult to see the final design. However, several details stand out.
The front appears to follow the styling direction introduced by the latest Mercedes CLA and upcoming GLB Electric models. The headlights seem to feature Mercedes’ signature star pattern, while the lower bumper includes a wide air intake.
From the side, the AMG version shows several upgrades over the standard model, including:
- Wider wheel arches
- Lightweight alloy wheels
- Large performance brakes with red brake calipers
- Low profile tyres
- Lower sport suspension
The rear of the prototype looks relatively simple. Mercedes AMG may reserve a more aggressive bumper and small styling changes for the production version.
Interior Expected To Get AMG Specific Features
Although the cabin was partially covered, several details were visible.
Expected interior highlights include:
- Flat bottom leather and Alcantara steering wheel
- AMG performance steering wheel controls
- Silver interior trim
- Sports seats with white contrast stitching
- 10.25 inch digital instrument cluster
- 14 inch infotainment touchscreen
- Optional 14 inch front passenger display
Overall, the cabin is expected to share most of its layout with other MMA platform models while adding AMG specific touches.
Powertrain Could Deliver More Than 500 HP
Mercedes is expected to offer the regular GLA Electric in multiple versions.
The expected lineup includes:
| Variant | Expected Output |
|---|---|
| GLA 250+ | Single motor setup |
| GLA 350 4MATIC | 349 hp and 515 Nm |
| AMG GLA Electric | More than 500 hp (expected) |
The current CLA 350 4MATIC uses an 85 kWh battery along with a dual motor all wheel drive system. It produces 349 hp and 515 Nm of torque, accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, and delivers an EPA estimated range of 312 miles or around 502 km.
The AMG version is expected to take performance much further.
Reports suggest it could use three axial flux electric motors producing over 500 hp. Mercedes may also fit a unique high energy density battery designed specifically for AMG models.
Inspired By The New AMG GT 4 Door
Mercedes AMG has already introduced its latest high performance electric setup in the new AMG GT 4 Door.
That model uses three axial flux motors, two at the rear and one at the front, producing up to 1,153 hp. While the upcoming GLA Electric will not reach that level of performance, it is expected to borrow the same technology on a smaller scale.
What To Expect
The Mercedes AMG GLA Electric may not attract attention with an aggressive exterior, but it could impress buyers where it matters most.
If the expected three motor setup reaches production, this electric crossover could offer sports car performance while remaining practical enough for everyday driving. Mercedes AMG appears to be putting its efforts into engineering rather than dramatic styling, and that could make this one of its most interesting compact electric vehicles.
