Infiniti QX80 Red Sport Delayed to 2028
Infiniti has decided to delay the launch of the Infiniti QX80 Red Sport, giving engineers more time to make the performance SUV more capable than originally planned. Instead of focusing mainly on extra horsepower and sporty styling, the company now wants the SUV to deliver a complete high performance driving experience.
According to a report by Automotive News, the QX80 Red Sport is now expected to arrive in 2028, likely alongside the SUV’s mid cycle refresh.

Infiniti Wants More Than Just Extra Horsepower
When the project was first reported earlier this year, the QX80 Red Sport was expected to produce around 600 horsepower and arrive during 2026. The plan at the time was simple. Increase the power, give it a sportier appearance, and leave the more serious mechanical upgrades for a future production version of the QX80 Track Spec concept.
That plan has now changed.
Infiniti says it wants the Red Sport to offer more than straight line speed. The company is reportedly working on:
- Around 600 horsepower
- Retuned performance suspension
- Larger and stronger brakes
- Wider fender flares
- More aggressive aerodynamics
- Active exhaust system
- New front grille and redesigned lower bumper
- 24 inch wheels
- Interior upgrades exclusive to the Red Sport
These changes are expected to make the SUV feel significantly different from the standard QX80 rather than simply being a more powerful version.
Infiniti Explains the Delay
Eric Ledieu, Vice President of Infiniti Americas, explained why the company chose to delay the project.
He said the team realized that adding power alone was not enough for a vehicle in this segment. Buyers spending six figures on a performance luxury SUV expect improvements in handling, braking, and overall driving dynamics along with stronger acceleration.
Infiniti believes taking extra time now is better than releasing a product that does not fully meet customer expectations.
Performance Target
The current Infiniti QX80 is powered by a 3.5 litre twin turbocharged V6 engine producing 450 horsepower.
Infiniti reportedly plans to increase output by well over 20 percent, putting the Red Sport close to the 600 horsepower mark.
The company is also targeting:
| Specification | Current QX80 | Expected QX80 Red Sport |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 3.5 litre twin turbo V6 | Upgraded twin turbo V6 |
| Power | 450 hp | Around 600 hp |
| 0 to 60 mph | 6.1 seconds | Under 5 seconds |
| Performance Upgrades | Standard setup | Suspension, brakes, aero, active exhaust |
If Infiniti achieves its acceleration goal, the Red Sport would become one of the quickest full size luxury SUVs in its lineup.
Exterior Will Look More Aggressive
Infiniti also plans to make the Red Sport visually stand apart from the standard QX80.
Expected exterior upgrades include:
- New grille design
- Revised lower front fascia
- Wide fender flares
- Functional aerodynamic components
- Active exhaust system
- Large 24 inch alloy wheels
Several of these features are inspired by the QX80 Track Spec Concept, which previewed Infiniti’s vision for a more performance focused flagship SUV.
Cabin Changes Expected
While Infiniti has not revealed full interior details, the Red Sport is expected to receive exclusive cabin upgrades that help justify its premium positioning.
These could include unique materials, sportier trim, and model specific design elements to distinguish it from the standard QX80 range.
Expected Price
The Infiniti QX80 Sport currently starts at $104,140.
The upcoming Red Sport is expected to cost approximately $30,000 more, placing its starting price near $134,000.
Infiniti reportedly expects annual sales of more than 600 units, making it a low volume flagship performance model.
What Happens to the QX80 Track Spec?
The delay also raises questions about the future of the QX80 Track Spec.
Originally, Infiniti planned for the Track Spec to sit above the Red Sport with nearly 700 horsepower. However, achieving that level of performance would require major powertrain changes and significantly higher development costs.
As the Red Sport itself becomes more capable, Infiniti may decide that a separate Track Spec model is no longer necessary.
At this stage, the future of the Track Spec remains uncertain.
Final Thoughts
The delay may disappoint buyers who were waiting for the Infiniti QX80 Red Sport, but it also suggests Infiniti wants to launch a product that offers more than just impressive power figures. With stronger brakes, upgraded suspension, improved aerodynamics, and an expected output of around 600 horsepower, the Red Sport could become a much more complete performance SUV when it finally arrives in 2028.
