Mercedes Drivers Clash During Canadian GP Sprint After Aggressive Battle for the Lead
Table of Contents
Mercedes finally had the kind of internal fight everyone expected this season. George Russell and Kimi Antonelli started the Sprint race in Canada from the front row for Mercedes, but things got tense within just a few laps at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
The battle itself was exciting. The timing of it? Probably not ideal for Mercedes.

Russell and Antonelli Go Wheel to Wheel Early
Both Mercedes drivers launched well at the start of the Sprint race. Russell held the lead while Antonelli stayed close behind waiting for an opportunity.
By lap five, the young Italian made his first serious move.
Antonelli pulled alongside Russell on the back straight before the final chicane. He could not complete the move there, so he immediately tried again into Turn 1 around the outside. Russell defended hard and closed the door early, leaving Antonelli with very little space on the outside.
The two Mercedes cars made slight contact during the fight.
Antonelli went off track and had to rejoin with cold tires, but he still managed to stay close to Russell for a short time.
Antonelli Kept Pushing Too Hard
The 19 year old did not back off after the first failed attempt.
Antonelli attacked again only moments later. This time he ran across the grass while trying to stay alongside Russell. The move unsettled the car badly and cost him momentum.
That aggressive fighting allowed Lando Norris to close the gap quickly in the McLaren. Norris soon passed Antonelli and pushed the Mercedes driver down to third place.
Instead of working together and securing a comfortable one two result in the Sprint, Mercedes suddenly found itself under pressure from McLaren.
Toto Wolff Was Clearly Frustrated
Antonelli immediately complained on team radio after the incident with Russell. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff did not sound interested in discussing it during the race.
Wolff reportedly told Antonelli to focus on driving instead of complaining on the radio.
Later in the race, Antonelli caught Norris again and nearly made contact at the hairpin while trying to regain second place. On the final lap he attempted another late move into Turn 1 but carried too much speed into the corner.
He had to cut the corner and eventually gave the place back.
Once again, Antonelli vented on the radio. Once again, Wolff shut the discussion down quickly and said the team would discuss things internally later.
What Russell and Antonelli Said After the Sprint
Antonelli admitted after the race that the move was optimistic but still believed he deserved room on the outside.
According to Antonelli:
“I was quite well alongside, and there was definitely contact.”
He also admitted the move was “definitely optimistic.”
Russell defended his actions and said he raced Antonelli no differently than any other driver on the grid.
The British driver also suggested that overtaking around the outside at Turn 1 was always going to be difficult.
Mercedes Tension Was Always Coming
This incident probably does not surprise anyone following Mercedes this year.
Antonelli has already shown serious pace this season with strong performances in China, Japan, and Miami. Russell meanwhile has been trying to establish himself as the clear team leader after Lewis Hamilton’s departure.
Two fast drivers in equal machinery usually create tension sooner or later.
The bigger issue for Mercedes is that this happened during a Sprint race instead of the main Grand Prix. The team risked losing valuable points over aggressive internal fighting that could have waited until later in the race.
Canadian Grand Prix Main Race Could Get Interesting
Now the focus shifts to Sunday’s main Canadian Grand Prix race.
Mercedes team management will almost certainly speak with both drivers before the lights go out. Toto Wolff will not want another unnecessary intra team battle costing the team points during the full race.
Still, moments like this also show something positive for Formula 1 fans.
Mercedes finally has two drivers willing to fight each other hard on track. Even if the garage atmosphere becomes uncomfortable, it definitely makes things more entertaining for everyone watching.
